Pinkney eyeing victories in '09

At 56, seasoned campaigner David Pinkney insists age is no barrier and that he can win races in this year’s HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship.

Hertfordshire-based Pinkney will race for former title-winning squad Team Dynamics in a Honda Civic alongside rapid Scot Gordon Shedden, starting with this weekend's opening round at
Brands Hatch.

Having raced on and off in the BTCC since 1988, he told btcc.net: “I still think I’m capable of winning and if I can get the car near where I need it then I really believe it is possible.

“Dynamics have built me a brand new car for Brands and it’s going to look stunning. If it goes as well as the orange Honda I’ve been testing I’ll be a very happy chap.

“I feel like I’m with the McLaren team of the BTCC – the team is awesome. The feedback, the data, the professionalism, the set-up – you can see why this is a title-winning team.

“Having Gordon as a team-mate is good for me. He’s extremely quick and been faster than me in every test but that just spurs me on. He’s developed that car for the past two years and it’s therefore understandably set up to more his style so it’s difficult for me to walk in and say move it towards me. But I think as we get into the season I’ll be able to dial a bit of my set-up into it and
go quicker.”

Pinkney says the appeal of the BTCC – with its ultra-high levels of competition, huge trackside crowds and a live ITV4 television audience – is as attractive as he’s ever known.

He added: “I love it. I’ve been in the BTCC going back over two decades and as far as I’m concerned it’s the only championship to race in. It is motor racing at its peak.

“I looked at something else last year but there were three people in the stands. I want to race against the hardest and in front of the crowds and TV cameras and if I can get a win then good for the old sods!”
